Estelle Gibson passed away peacefully on June 3, 2016, after a long and full life devoted to her family. She was 94. Born on July 5, 1921 in Marbury, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Bennie and Mae Willett Milstead. Estelle grew up in Washington, DC and Parkland, MD. She graduated from Maryland Park High School. She was a secretary at various companies including Hicks Express and 7-Up before beginning her career with the Prince George’s County School System. She worked at Carmody Hills & Concord Elementary Schools before retiring. She married George Roland Gibson in 1940 and lived in Washington, DC and Parkland, MD, before moving to Capital Heights, MD. In 1976, they moved to Port Tobacco, MD. She is survived by her sons; George Roland Gibson, Jr. and his wife Maria, and Kevin Gibson and his wife Mary, grandchildren; Michael, Matthew, Christopher, Patrick, Carly and her husband Alex, and a great-granddaughter, Paige Gibson. She is preceded in death by her husband, Roland, son, Michael and daughters-in-law, Ellen and Louise, brothers; Cornelius, Donald, Elmer, Warren, Wayne and Ben. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at 11 AM at St. Ignatius Catholic Church – Chapel Point, 8855 Chapel Point Rd., Port Tobacco, MD 20677. A visitation will be held at the church from 10:30 to 11 AM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. William Bernard Ewing, Sr. (Bill), devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, died on June 3, 2016 at his beloved Cedardale Farm in Easton, MD at the age of 88. Bill was born on November 7, 1927 in Easton, MD. He graduated from Easton High School in 1944. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1945 and served 3 years in the Pacific as a Radarman Second Class aboard destroyer escorts, USS Raby and USS Spangler. On April 20, 1949 he married his sweetheart, Jane, who stayed by his side for 65 years. He started his family on Hickory Ridge Farm in Easton, MD before moving to Cedardale Farm near Longwoods, MD in 1957. With his wife, he raised 8 children on the family farm, where he spent his days farming, raising livestock, hunting and making a full life for his family. Bill is survived by his children, Bill Ewing, Jr., David Ewing (Connie), Rosie Johnson, Cindy Steedman (Mark), Althy Dulin (Bunk), Lisa Andrew (Jimmy), Nat Ewing (Sally) and Clive Ewing (Michelle); 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Charles Ewing; and dozens of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Spies Ewing, parents Joseph Calvin and Helen Marth Ewing; brothers Philip, Joseph and John; twin sister, Rosalie Nordike; sister, Mary Smith Hessler and his son-in-law Frank Johnson. A Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 8, 2916 at 11 AM. at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 1210 S. Washington Street, Easton, MD, where a visitation will be held one hour prior from 10-11 AM. Interment will be private at the Eastern Shore Veterans Cemetery. Immediately following the service there will be a reception at the V.F.W. at 355 Glebe Road, Easton, MD. All family and friends are welcome to attend and celebrate Bill’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at 1210 S. Washington St, Easton, Maryland 21601. Mrs. Florence Elizabeth Simmons
Florence E. Simmons of Chestertown, MD died on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Chestertown. She was 93. Born on April 24, 1923 in Cordova, MD, she was the daughter of the late William Henry and Annie Florence Swartz Morris. She graduated from Cordova High School in 1940 and married James Burdette Simmons on November 12, 1942 in Chestertown. She raised her four children before joining the work force on September 18, 1962 with Campbell’s Soup Co. in Chestertown, until retiring on May 1, 1985. Mrs. Simmons attended Bond Chapel and later Chestertown Baptist Church. She loved to cook,read and complete crossword puzzles. Mrs. Simmons was an archer, artist,gardener and was her family’s biggest fan. Known for her famous chicken salad, amazing pies and the best macaroni and cheese, she was a kind, caring, compassionate, strong and humble neighbor, friend and a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by two sons; David B. Simmons and his wife Kathy of Chestertown, MD and Jonathan Simmons and his wife Sue of Greensboro, MD; a daughter; Mary Simmons of Chestertown, MD; six grandchildren; Shari Medina (Guido), Karen Oliffe, Jes Simmons (Morgan), Rob Simmons, Gabe Presley (Lisa) and Beth Schaeffer (Bill); and five great grandchildren; Isaiah Presley, Asher Presley, Brennan Schaeffer, Brooks Schaeffer and Alli Schaeffer. She is also survived by a brother, Bill Morris of Tilghman, MD and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 10, 2016 at 11:00 am at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Chestertown, MD, where relatives and friends may call on Thursday, June 9, 2016 from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Interment will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery, following the service. Mr. Robert Weldon Pinder
Robert “Shorty” Weldon Pinder of Henderson, MD died Sunday, June5, 2016at Memorial Hospital in Easton. He was73. Born March 4, 1943in Chestertown, “Shorty” was the son of the late William Jackson Pinder and Annabelle “Pearson” Pinder. Mr. Pinder attended Sudlersville High School through the11th grade before going to work on a farm in Delaware. He soon acquired a job at Delmarva Sash and Door where he has worked for over 50 years. On March 25, 1972 he married his wife of 44 years, Virginia Lee Pinder. “Shorty” was a life member of the Goldsboro Vol. Fire Dept and enjoyed volunteering to help the Burrisville Ruritans with their fundraisers and their annual dinner. His hobbies included going to his grandchildren’s sporting events, NASCAR races, spending time in his garage and spending time with his family. Shorty was also an avid bowler for many years. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Arthur “Sonny” Jackson Pinder. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee Pinder of Henderson, MD, daughter Lora Robbins and partner Tiffany of Denton, MD grandchildren, Ryan, Megan, Tyler, and London, sister, Merita Crew and husband David, many sisters and brothers in law, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. A visitation will be held Thursday, June 9, 2016 from 5 -7 pm at Fellows Family Funeral Home 370 Cypress St. Millington, MD and on Friday, June 10, 2016 from 11am- 1pm also at the funeral home. Mrs. Elizabeth Duckworth Copeland
Elizabeth Duckworth Copeland of Chestertown, Maryland, formerly of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 1, 2016. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on December 13, 1917, the daughter of the late Robert York and Janet Muir Duckworth. Sister of the late Anne Brokaw (Robert). A graduate of Classical High School and Pembroke College (Brown University). In 1939, she married Earl Alexander Powell, Jr., who predeceased her in 1947, as a result of injuries sustained in World War II. In 1956, Elizabeth married Preston Sumner Copeland and they were married for 32 years, residing in Woods Hole, MA and Newport, RI, prior to Preston’s death in 1988. Known as Betsy to her friends, she will most be remembered for her beauty, sharp intellect, independence, humor, memory, and her love for her family. Always stylish and up for a good party, she loved to sew, travel, play tennis, win at the bridge table, and enjoyed telling a good story. Betsy was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, The Newport Garden Club, Bailey’s Beach Club, The Clambake Club, and Redwood Library. She survived by her children, Earl Alexander Powell, III (Nancy), Director of the National Gallery of Art of Washington, DC and Easton, MD, and Janet Powell McDonough of Garden City, NY and Bonita Springs, FL. Her stepson, Peter Davidson Copeland predeceased her in 1983. Her son-in-law, Donald McDonough, Jr. predeceased her in 2009. Her grandchildren, Cortney Chaite (Maurice), Peter Copeland, Jr., Donald McDonough, III (Robin), Jeffrey Copeland (Kelly), Elizabeth McDonough, Channing Powell-Soverow (Jon), Sumner Powell and 9 great-grandchildren. At the age of 98, Betsy’s friends spanned every generation. She will be greatly missed by all. A graveside ceremony at the Church of the Messiah, Woods Hole, MA, will take place on Thursday, June 9th at 10:00am. There will be a memorial service at Trinity Episcopal Church, Newport, RI in August. In lieu of flowers, donations to the LUNGevity Foundation, 228 S. Wabash Ave., Suite 700, Chicago, IL 60604, are appreciated.
